Welcome to Year 1!
As your child moves into Year 1 they are starting the National Curriculum and are now in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2). In the first half of the autumn term many children will still be working through the final stages of the Early Learning Goals but by October half term the majority of children will start the National Curriculum.
In Year 1 there is also a national phonics assessment that takes place in June, this is administered in familiar surroundings with a known member of staff working with individual children and asking them to sound out a list of words, some of which are made up words, so that their phonics skills can be assessed. Children are usually relaxed during this process as they are well prepared in their daily phonics sessions and have used the screening tool earlier in the year to practice. We do not tell children that it is a test as to do their best they need to be relaxed and think it is a fun phonics quiz.
See also our Phonics section (link) that gives more information about our approach and the scheme that we use.
We hope in this section of our website that you will find everything that you need to support your child during the year but if you think that there is anything missing - please let us know via the school office!
