Fresh Start is a successful Literacy intervention programme developed by Ruth Miskin to rescue pupils age 9 and above who are below age-related expectations. The programme is designed to build confidence in reading and spelling, by ensuring children are given repeated opportunities to embed their learning. Children are identified in September of each year and then work in one of 3 small groups, depending on their ability, with an experienced, trained Teaching Assistant or Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA). They will work with a partner to read and discuss the texts, using lots of repetition to ensure learning is reinforced. Partner work provides them with extra practise, supports their comprehension skills, and helps them to build confidence in their reading.
